Gray Area

The other day I was out taking pictures at Oval Beach, and the sky was gray and Lake Michigan was gray and the snow reflected in my camera’s viewfinder was gray and the small frozen lake behind the dunes was gray and the little rat skittering across the ice was gray-brown. I thought it was all very beautiful, and the caption in my head read “I love a gray area.” Then I wondered about spelling gray with an ‘a’ or an ‘e,’ and I realized that I prefer gray with an ‘a’ because it just looks softer—even kinder—than grey with an ‘e.’ Is that just me?
